Online Social Networks have become a rage amongst the youth today as they provide an easy platform for peer-to-peer connectivity. So high is the popularity of these social networks that some social scientists have published doctoral thesis on the popularity of emerging social networks. The primary reason why social networks have acquired unprecedented word of mouth popularity is because they provide a free, hassle free mechanism for posting , messages, uploading photographs, videos on to the web so that fellow users can get a glimpse into the other person’s life.
Social networks can be of varied types and can be classified according to the theme. There are some like Orkut that are purely personal in nature and provide users with an effective means to connect with their peers and extended circle of friends. These networks can also be leveraged to reconnect with old school time pals, college classmates and colleagues. Infact, the primary reason why many people log on to these networks is because they want to re-establish their lost contacts.
Others like Linked In, Face book help users in professional networking.
There are still others, which are purely dedicated to sports like football like Joga Bonita. Social Networks like ANOBII are dedicated purely to book lovers while there are some community specific networks, which serve as a means for expatriates to connect to their homelands. These community specific social networks like Biip, Blackplanet help people find people of the same nationality if they choose to settle in a foreign country. Other social networks which are dedicated to hobbies like music (Buzznet) and investing ( cake financial) have also acquired a critical mass of subscribers and benefit immensely from a loyal fan following.
These social networks have been found to be quite addictive and users tend to visit these portals quite religiously. Finding new friends also becomes easy as you can gain significant amount of information about a stranger through these networks.
So high is the addiction with these social networks that users have been found to spend many hours each week just surfing these networks. Curiosity about what is happening is other people’s lives also has fuelled the exponential growth of these social networks. Earlier people used to keep in touch with their peers with emails or telephone calls, which were time consuming. Now all you need to get a glimpse into anyone’s life is to visit his profile on any social; network. Users find this a convenient way to keep in touch and it also fulfills their latent desire for gossip. By secretly snooping into the personal and professional life of their friends, neighbors, family members, and relatives on a regular basis users satisfy their craving for the juice other people’s lives.
